【英語多益通】出國看展覽必須搞懂的3個英文字

想要知道產品最新資訊，最快的方法就是參加商展。近些年來，越來越多人看國內商展不過癮，還會搭機出國看展，順便度假旅遊。出國看展是運用平日所學英文的大好機會，其中有幾個表示「商展、 博覽會」的英文字，把它們學得精熟，就有基本分。

1. exhibitexhibit可當動詞的「展示」或名詞的「陳列品」、「證物」，但是據說美國人喜歡把此字拿來當名詞的「商展」用，原因待查。但是你不妨觀察是不是歐洲客戶多把它當動詞、而美國客戶則喜歡當名詞使用。exhibits designer則是常見的「展場籌劃設計人員」。

比起exhibit，exhibition也是「商展、博覽會」的超高頻字，而且更正統。「h」同樣不發音，但「ex-」要發 [ɛks]，與exhibit的[ɪgz]不同，整個字讀作[͵ɛksəˋbɪʃən]。

The foundation is staging the World Trade exhibition.（基金會正在舉辦世界貿易展覽會。）

2. exposition動詞expose有「暴露、揭露、曝光」與「使看得見」之意，字首「ex-」是out（外、出），字源義是「放出來」，放出來纔會被看到。而expose的名詞exposition之所以衍伸爲「商展、博覽會」，也是取其公司產品陳列出來而被買家看見。此外，前4個字母expo也可以指「商展、博覽會」，例如臺北花博就是Flora Expo。exposition讀作[͵ɛkspəˋzɪʃən]。

The city government plans to build an exposition center in this area.（市政府計劃在這個地區建一座商展中心。）

3. fair看美國影集或好萊塢電影，常會聽到「That is not fair!」（那不公平！），這是fair形容詞用法，指「公平的、公正的」，口語上也常聽到「Fair enough!」，指「有道理、說得對」。不過，fair當名詞時，指的是「商展、博覽會」，尤其常看到careers fair是指「就業博覽會」，例如veterans job fair是「退伍軍人求職博覽會」。

Many publishers are taking part in the International Fashion Fair, which is starting on Friday.（許多出版商參加國際時尚展覽會，於週五開幕。）

出國去看國際展覽的情境不僅會出現在多益測驗的閱讀題，也會在聽力部分出現。例如以下出自於《多益測驗官方全真試題指南Ⅲ》的題目：

解析：第92題是問「此段說明的主要對象爲誰」，正確答案是(D)。這是一道有趣的聽力題組，當CD放出此段說明時，第一句話就說出了重點：Welcome to the New Technology Fair（歡迎參加新科技展覽會）。若是能在第一句就聽到了這個fair一字，此題組纔有得分勝算。

接下來是Today's schedule will give you a chance to present your companies' newest products，意指「今天將會是呈現你們各公司最新產品的機會」，表示說話對象不是看展覽的一般民衆，而是參展的廠商代表人員，所以答案是presenters at a technology fair――在商展中做產品簡報表演的人。presentation是簡報，而presenter是做此動作的人。本題很容易陷入商展廣播多半是針對看展賓客或民衆的情境陷阱，而誤選答案(B)。

第93題是問「按照行程，接下來會發生什麼？」正確答案是(C)。線索是第二句and there will be some great demonstrations here today，以及最後一句let's get back to our planned agenda to show those exciting new products，從兩句的demonstrations與show可以推知產品「展示」即將開始，所以是答案(C)Products will be demonstrated。
